About San Diego CA 92127

San Diego 92127 is located approximately 25 miles north of downtown San Diego along the I-15 North County Inland corridor.

To the east is the San Diego community of Rancho Bernardo. To the west is Rancho Santa Fe. Lake Hodges and the Santa Fe Valley form the northern border of the area while the Black Mountain Open Space Park and the San Diego community of Rancho Peñasquitos are situated to the south. San Diego 92127 is approximately 8 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. (See map.)

Two large master planned communities are located in San Diego 92127.

Located on 2,900 acres, the master planned community of 4S Ranch will, when completed, feature 4,715 homes clustered around 4S Commons, a traditional town center. Amenities will include four neighborhood schools in the highly rated Poway Unified School District, a variety of parks, miles of walking trails and more than 1,600 acres of protected open space. With tree-lined neighborhoods, homes with front porches and walkable promenades, 4S Ranch is modeled after California's finest traditional residential communities.

Black Mountain Ranch consists of almost 4,700 acres of land of which more than 2,870 acres will be permanently protected open space (including 1,760 acres that will be set aside for the San Dieguito River Park). Black Mountain Ranch is being developed in phases. The first phase, known as Santaluz, consists of almost 3,800 acres of land on which over 900 homes have been built. A private 18-hole golf course is located in this phase. The second phase, on just under 900 acres, consists of two housing areas: Verrazzano (which is complete) and Del Sur (a master planned community that is still under development). Phase 2, when completed, will have approximately 3200 homes. Amenties in Black Mountain Ranch are expected to include a resort hotel and public golf course, 5 neighborhood schools, a variety of parks, and more than 18 miles of trails within the beautiful rolling landscape.

Other major housing developments in San Diego 92127 include The Crosby Estates, Santa Fe Valley, Camino Bernardo, High Country West, Westwood, and Westwood Valley.

History of 4S Ranch

The origin of the name 4S Ranch is not specifically known. The first recorded owner of Rancho San Bernardo, as the area in which 4S Ranch is currently located, was by an Englishman named Joseph Snook (who later became a Mexican citizen and changed his name to Don Jose Francisco Snook). After the collapse of the California mission system around 1840, Snook obtained a land grant to build his own rancho where 4S Ranch now stands. Many now believe the "S" in 4S Ranch stands for "Snook". The "4" probably stands for "4 Snooks", either Snook and his three brothers or Snook and his wife and two children.

The property changed hands several times over the next 100 years. In 1938, the property was sold to the Ralphs family, owners of the southern California grocery chain. In the early 1980s, the Ralphs family agreed to develop the southern portion of their property (what is now the 4S Ranch master planned community) and retain the northern 1200 acres as a family retreat.
